Press Release: Golden Squeegee Awards Shine Downtown

Weather cleared in time to  “A Clear View of Downtown”. Energetic volunteers gathered in downtown Oregon City today for a uniquely downtown celebration of Oregon’s 150th year of statehood.

Two dozen volunteers and a dozen business owners cleaned more than 150 windows (178 to be exact) in less than150 minutes in downtown Oregon City. The event, “A Clear View of Downtown” was coordinated by the newly created non-profit Main Street Oregon City.

“Windows are a vital part of downtown retail,” said Lloyd Purdy, Downtown Manager for Oregon City.  “This event celebrates the important role historic downtown Oregon City has played in the state’s history. As Oregon’s oldest city we thought it important to show our support for Oregon 150.”

As part of this creative downtown celebration of Oregon’s 150th Birthday, three Golden Squeegee Awards were presented.  One Golden Squeegee award was presented to the participating downtown storefront with the cleanest window. One Golden Squeegee award was presented to the volunteers who cleaned the most windows. One Golden Squeegee award was presented for best overall style while cleaning windows.

Anna and Jerry Handegard of AJH Financial at 217 7th Street were presented with the Golden Squeegee Award for cleanest storefront window.

Volunteers Jerry Lord, recently retired Environmental Technician at Blue Heron (retired this week after 21 years at Blue Heron) and Kate McCutchen, Environmental Engineer at Blue Heron, were presented with the Golden Squeegee Award for cleaning the most windows. At last count they were on window number 78 and still working.

Deborah Pettitt of Farmer’s Insurance at 703 Main Street won the Golden Squeegee Award for most style while cleaning a window. She was dressed in 1850’s period clothing (including a hoop skirt) while cleaning her storefront window.

“A Clear View of Downtown” was supported by SOLV as a Take Care of Oregon project and downtown paper manufacturer Blue Heron Paper Company.

Blue Heron donated its new product, Natural Towels, to use to clean downtown Oregon City’s windows. “A Clear View of Downtown” window cleaning project was the first public use of Blue Heron’s new Natural Towels made from curbside recycled paper and office waste. These paper towels are 100% recycled, contain over 50% post consumer content, and will be produced for the away-from-home market in rolls and interfolded towels.
