Oregon City is a City of Firsts and we’re pleased to celebrate our community’s creative spirit, location as a gateway to the Willamette Valley wine region, and our historic downtown during the First City Celebration.
Visitors are welcome to join us in Downtown Oregon City beginning at 11 am until the music stops (around 9 p.m.) for music, food, wine, beer and artwork.
The producing partners of this special event – the non-profit Main Street Oregon City, the Three Rivers Artist Guild and the Rotary Club of Oregon City would like to thank the First City Celebration event sponsors WILDISH, the Oregonian and the OCCIT grant program.

Elevator — Local icon, vertical street and connective corridor — featured in national competition.
Oregon City’s Municipal Elevator has been selected from a nation-wide search as one of 100 “places that matter”. Through the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s This Place Matters Community Challenge; the only vertical street in the county and a local icon is in the running for a $25,000 cash prize that could be used to help restore the structure.
The National Trust’s This Place Matters Community Challenge selected 100 sites from around the country to compete for 3 cash awards by inviting the public to vote for their favorite place. Voting begins on June 1st at www.PreservationNation.org/communitychallenge and closes on June 30th.
“This contest is an opportunity to put Oregon City back on the map, as a community that cares about our places and spaces,” said Lloyd Purdy, Director of the non-profit Main Street Oregon City. “No other city has a local icon as unique as the Municipal Elevator.”
Public voting begins June 1st via the website: www.PreservationNation.org/communitychallenge.
“I’ve grown up here in Oregon City and the Municipal Elevator has been a consistent reminder of Oregon City’s ingenuity and heritage,” said Terri Powers, President of the Board of Directors of the non-profit Main Street Oregon City.
The Oregon City Municipal Elevator operates as one of only four municipal elevators in the world. The Elevator is the only “vertical street” in North America, and provides a physical connection between Oregon City’s residential neighborhoods and our historic waterfront downtown.
Oregon City relies upon this iconic regional landmark as an important part of our local infrastructure, our identity and as a component of our heritage tourism offerings. Last year the municipal elevator carried more than 130,000 visitors to and from downtown Oregon City.
